I, Gazi, am with you to make your travel more remarkable. I have been living here since 2023.

Are you a fan of K-dramas? If you are, then you must notice that convenience stores!

These stores are widely known 편의점 (pyeonuijeom) in Korean and are more than just places to grab a quick snack, they’re cultural hubs, and a lot more. However, The Korean word 편의점 means convenience store and it is a perfect embodiment of what places offer! Sounds wow, you know!

Let’s learn a bit about the history of convenience stores in Korea. They play a significant role in both economic and cultural changes. The first was founded in the late 1980s and it was called “Lotte Seven”. It began to become popular. It also changes the Koran lifestyle as well. People started working longer hours and had less time for traditional shopping and cooking. The result is simple!

It began to spread whole of Korea. Convenience stores started providing various kinds of products – instant meals, snacks, and so on.

Popular Chains:

  • GS25: Known for its broad selection of fresh food and exclusive items.
  • CU: Offers a wide variety of products and is known for its frequent promotions and limited-time offers.

  • Ramyeon
  • Kimbap
  • Lunch Box (도시락/ do-si-Rak)
  • Snacks

You have a wide range of options of food – Ramyeon, and Korean instant noodles – which are some of the most popular items in the store. Every store offers a different type and sizes of noodles and sometimes you can find variations in the price compared to different stores. It’s perfect for someone who is looking for a quick bit too large, more filling portions and milder and spicier flavors!

One of the most common and iconic Ramyeon is called Nongshim Shin Ramyeon. It’s one of my favorites and you could try it as well. Its spicy flavor gives a vibe!

Another Ramyeon to try is Ottogi Jin Ramyeon. It is mildly spicy which is good for those who do not like spicy.

Samyang Buldak Bokkeum Myeon is also recommended to have if you are in a Korean convenience store. It’s very spicy! Don’t try if you do not like spicy.

Kimbap is a popular and convenient snack in South Korea, often found in the form of 삼각김밥 (samgak kimbap), or triangle kimbap. This snack features a filling wrapped in white rice and covered with seaweed, all neatly packaged in plastic wrap. Fillings range from traditional options like kimchi and tuna to more modern choices like chicken and pork. Samgak kimbap is perfect for a quick meal at any time of day, with prices typically ranging from 1,000 to 1,500 won, depending on size and flavor.

In addition to triangle kimbap, Korean convenience stores offer other traditional roll-form kimbap varieties. Popular choices include vegetable kimbap, tuna-mayo kimbap, and beef kimbap.

Another popular quick meal option at Korean convenience stores is the 도시락 (dosirak), or lunchbox. A typical dosirak features a main dish such as bulgogi (Korean braised beef), donkatsu (breaded and fried pork), or fried chicken, paired with white rice and a variety of side dishes like kimchi, egg, and stir-fried vegetables. Despite their compact size, these lunchboxes offer a satisfying mix of flavors and textures, making them a great choice for a quick and filling lunch or dinner.

A trip to the convenience store isn’t complete without grabbing a snack or two. Convenience stores in Korea offer a wide variety of snacks, from chocolate and ice cream to savory options like chips and crackers. You’ll find a mix of both international and Korean snacks on the shelves. While snacks from abroad can be pricey, local Korean brands are typically more affordable.
