Best Things to Do Pyeongchang in South Korea (2025)

During my time studying here in South Korea, I’ve had the chance to explore some incredible destinations.

Today, I want to share my insights about Pyeongchang – a place that’s way more than just the 2018 Winter Olympics host city.

Pyeongchang is located in Gangwon Province, about 180 kilometers east of Seoul.

Getting from Seoul to Pyeongchang: The KTX train takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to Jinbu Station, making it super convenient for a weekend getaway from the capital.

Pyeongchang has been a mountain farming community for centuries, but it really put itself on the world map when it hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics. The area has a rich agricultural history, particularly known for its potato farming and traditional mountain culture.

Don’t confuse Pyeongchang (평창) with Pyongyang (평양) – that’s North Korea’s capital! I’ve seen this mix-up happen way too often with travelers.

Is Pyeongchang Worth Visiting?

Absolutely yes! Here’s why I think every Korea traveler should consider Pyeongchang:

  • Stunning mountain scenery that looks different in every season
  • Winter sports facilities that hosted Olympic events
  • Fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere
  • Unique local food you won’t find in Seoul
  • Easy access from major cities

Best Things to Do in Pyeongchang

Winter Activities (December-February)

Skiing and Snowboarding: Yongpyong Resort and Alpensia Resort offer world-class slopes. Even if you’re a beginner, the rental equipment is great and lessons are available in English.

Ice fishing: Try catching mountain trout through holes in frozen lakes – it’s a unique Korean winter experience!

Snow festivals: Various snow and ice sculpture festivals happen throughout winter.

Year-Round Attractions

Alpensia Resort: Beyond winter sports, this Olympic venue offers zip-lining, mountain coasters, and beautiful walking trails. The architecture alone is worth seeing.

Woljeongsa Temple: A peaceful Buddhist temple with a stunning fir tree forest. It’s especially magical when covered in snow, but beautiful any season.

Odaesan National Park: Perfect for hiking with well-marked trails and incredible mountain views. The fall colors here are absolutely breathtaking.

Pyeongchang Olympic Plaza: Walk around where the Olympic ceremonies took place and take some cool photos with the Olympic rings.

Here are my must-visit places in Seoul and here you can visit and see the 10 famous temples of Seoul that are very close to you.

What Activities Can We Do in Winter?

Winter is truly Pyeongchang’s prime time. Here’s what makes it special:

  • Skiing/Snowboarding at Olympic-standard resorts
  • Snow tubing for families and non-skiers
  • Winter hiking with proper gear
  • Hot spring baths after cold outdoor activities
  • Traditional Korean winter foods like hot fish stew
