Namdaemun Market South Korea

Let's explore Namdaemun Market South Korea

Today, let’s have some fun in Namdaemun market. Me, Gazi, with you, who has been living in Korea since 2023 September.

Do you live to street food? Let’s have fun! I love Korean street food. I had a habit of having Korena Street food on a daily basis when I worked at Shinsegae Department Store near to Namdaemun Market.

However, “Namdaemun” means “Great South Gate,” named after the nearby historic gate, Sungnyemun (also known as Namdaemun).

Namdaemun Market is one of South Korea’s largest and oldest traditional markets, located in the heart of Seoul. This market still remains a vibrant and essential part of Seoul’s cultural and commercial landscape, offering a blend of the old and new, and a must-visit for anyone exploring the city.

Address: 21 Namdaemunsijang 4-gil, Jung-gu, Seoul, South Korea.

Proximity: The market is situated near major attractions like Myeongdong, Deoksugung Palace, and Seoul Station, making it easily accessible for tourists.

What to do

There is a lot to do! I am very excited to share with you. Actually, I worked near called Myongdong at a Burger store at Shinsegae Department Store. I never feel bored for a single day when I worked there and walk on the street for hours to see the excitement!

Shopping

A wide range of products are available there and they are very cheaper than regular prize. I still go sometimes for shopping. If you like some products (like me) – clothing, textiles, accessories, kitchenware, electronics, toys, food, and traditional Korean crafts – with reasonable prize, it is the place for you.

Wholesale and Retail

There are functions both as a wholesale and retail market, attracting local vendors and international visitors. I think, you will love it!

Food

I love the place for street food as I mention earlier. Hotteok (sweet pancakes), mandu (dumplings), and various Korean snacks will make your day special.

There are numerous also small restaurants and food stalls where visitors can enjoy traditional Korean dishes like bibimbap, noodles, and seafood.

Myeongdong

I think, no need to mention about Myeongdong!

Myeongdong Street, near Namdaemun Market, is famous for its shopping malls and luxury stores like Ralph Lauren, Chanel, and Rolex. Unlike the traditional Namdaemun Market, Myeongdong offers a modern atmosphere. Be sure to visit nearby attractions like Myeongdong Cathedral and the Underground Shopping Center.

Namsan Park

After a morning of shopping in Namdaemun Market, Namsan Park is a popular destination to visit. As the largest park in Seoul, it boasts scenic walking trails and hosts various events and festivals throughout the year. In spring, the park is renowned for its cherry blossoms, making it a must-visit for nature enthusiasts.

There is option of hiking! I went here by just hiking! Really amazing day that was.

Deoksugung Palace

Explore Seoul’s history at Deoksugung Palace near Namdaemun Market, once home to Joseon Dynasty royals. Discover its distinctive architecture, gardens, and fountains. Then, head to Art Center Nabi on the fourth floor of the SK Building in Jongno-gu for contemporary digital art.

Seoul History Museum

Before heading to the market for shopping and snacking on street food, visit the Seoul Museum of History. It showcases relics from the city and country’s past, along with special exhibits. The Seoul Museum of Art is another major attraction, featuring collections of Korean artists from various periods.

Tips for Visitors

Bargaining: Bargaining is common in the market, so visitors should be prepared to negotiate prices. If you don’t want, it’s ok!

Cash: While more places are accepting credit cards, having cash on hand is useful, especially for smaller vendors like street food.

Crowds: The market can get very crowded, particularly on weekends and during holidays, so visiting early in the morning can provide a more relaxed experience.
